Barcelona in August is famous for its neighbourhood festivals, which attract both locals and visitors every summer. Here's our pick of the best traditional ‘festes majors’ happening across Barcelona in August 2026.

August in Barcelona belongs to its neighbourhoods. As locals head off on summer holidays, the city's oldest and most beloved traditions take over the streets, transforming squares and avenues into spaces filled with music, fire runs, giants and community spirit. These ‘festes majors’ — neighbourhood festivals rooted in centuries of local history — offer a side of Barcelona that most visitors never see, far removed from the beaches and landmarks of the tourist trail.

This August, three stand out above the rest: the Festes de Sant Roc in the Gothic Quarter, Barcelona's oldest neighbourhood festival dating back to 1589; the Festa Major de Gràcia, famous for its spectacular hand-decorated streets; and the Festa Major de Sants, a slightly quieter but equally authentic celebration that closes out the month. Here's everything you need to know to experience them like a local.

Festes de Sant Roc (12–16 August, Gothic Quarter)

Dating back to 1589, the Festes de Sant Roc are Barcelona's oldest neighbourhood festival and remain one of its most charming traditions. Centred around Plaça Nova, beside Barcelona Cathedral, the celebrations combine centuries-old customs with a welcoming local atmosphere.

Expect giants, sardanes, the famous greasy-pole cucanya, traditional porró wine-drinking contests, local sweets, a dog blessing linked to the saint's legend and the ever-popular correfoc (fire run). Most activities are free, with the main celebrations taking place on 16 August.

The nearest metro station is Jaume I.

Festa Major de Gràcia (15–21 August)

If you only visit one festival during August, make it Gràcia.

Every summer, over 20 decorated streets in the Vila de Gràcia are transformed by residents into extraordinary handmade themed installations, creating one of Europe's most unique neighbourhood festivals. Alongside the spectacular street decorations, you'll find free concerts, castellers (human towers), correfocs, vermut gatherings and hundreds of community activities.

Visit during the daytime to admire the incredible street decorations and return after sunset if you're looking for live music and a lively atmosphere. Arriving in the early evening also helps you avoid the busiest crowds while still experiencing the festival at its best.

The easiest metro stations are Fontana (L3) and Joanic (L4).

Festa Major de Sants (22–30 August)

As Gràcia comes to an end, the celebrations move to neighbouring Sants, where decorated streets, free concerts and community events continue the festive spirit through the final days of August.

Although smaller than Gràcia, many locals prefer Sants for its more relaxed atmosphere. You'll find beautifully decorated streets, family-friendly activities, giants, correfocs, outdoor performances and plenty of opportunities to experience neighbourhood life away from the city's busiest tourist areas.

Plaça de Sants and Sants Estació metro stations provide easy access.
