November brings a different rhythm to Barcelona. Autumn flavours fill the bakeries, concert halls welcome international musicians, and the cultural calendar offers plenty of reasons to venture beyond the city’s famous sights.
Towards the end of the month, Christmas lights add another reason to linger outdoors after sunset.
Here are our six proposals for you to enjoy Barcelona this November.
1. Taste the traditions of La Castanyada
Around 1 November
November begins with All Saints’ Day and the flavours of La Castanyada, the Catalan celebration traditionally held on the evening of 31 October. Roasted chestnuts, sweet potatoes and panellets are its seasonal essentials.
Look out for these little almond-based sweets in neighbourhood bakeries. The classic version is covered in pine nuts, although coconut, chocolate and other varieties offer tempting alternatives. Pick up a small selection to share over coffee in your apartment, or enjoy them during a leisurely morning exploring Gràcia or the Eixample. It is a delicious introduction to a local autumn tradition.
2. Make an evening of the Barcelona Jazz Festival
Throughout November
The Barcelona Jazz Festival brings an excellent excuse to plan a night around live music. Its November programme stretches across intimate clubs and major concert halls, allowing you to choose the atmosphere as well as the artist.
Highlights include Branford Marsalis Quartet and Dianne Reeves celebrating John Coltrane on 3 November, and Samara Joy on 13 November, both at the Palau de la Música Catalana. Other concerts take place at venues including Jamboree and the Conservatori del Liceu.
Book ahead for your preferred performance and leave time for dinner nearby: this is an evening worth enjoying without rushing.
3. Explore imaginary worlds at Festival 42
4–8 November
Science fiction, fantasy and horror take centre stage at Festival 42, Barcelona’s celebration of speculative literature.
The festival invites readers to explore stories that move beyond everyday reality, bringing together writers, publishers and enthusiasts. It is a chance to discover a different side of Barcelona’s literary life.

5. See something unexpected at L’Alternativa
12–22 November
Barcelona’s independent film festival returns for its 33rd edition, offering cinema that explores unfamiliar perspectives and approaches to storytelling.
With the CCCB as its principal meeting point, L’Alternativa combines screenings with conversations, activities and opportunities to discover filmmakers outside the mainstream.
6. Welcome the first Christmas lights
26 November
Barcelona’s municipal calendar lists 26 November for the Christmas lights switch-on, marking the beginning of the city’s festive transformation.
Plan an evening stroll through the centre, with time to admire the illuminated streets and stop somewhere warm along the way. For guests staying at Bonavista Apartments, Passeig de Gràcia makes a natural starting point.
7. Catch the energy of the Jean Bouin race
29 November
The historic Jean Bouin road race rounds off the month with sporting energy. Its 103rd edition includes 5 km and 10 km routes, bringing runners onto Barcelona’s streets.
Join in if you fancy an active challenge, or enjoy the atmosphere as a spectator. Check registration details and the final route beforehand, especially if you have travel plans that morning.
From a jazz concert to a bag of warm chestnuts, November’s pleasures invite you to experience Barcelona at your own pace—with Bonavista Apartments as your neighbourhood base.
