MACBA CAFÈ has established as the new museum space open to visitors to it as well as to people who approach or walk through the neighborhood. Les Soirées is the event that takes place every Wednesday from 19:00 to 23:00 as an afterwork and that aims to be the essential appointment of the Raval when the meridian of the week arrives and that wants to congregate the most restless minds of the neighborhood to the son of DJs representative of the city.

This space is made up of eight tables, which occupy a privileged position of Plaça el Àngels of Barcelona.

The opening of this new space and service responds to this reflection focused on the improvement of the visitor’s experience and the conception of the museum as a place of welcome and meeting point. The museum wants to expand its limits and become an open, dynamic and stimulating space. In the same way that the content proposal has a sign of its own identity that is characterized by its international and local scope, the implementation of this service wants to contribute to strengthening this dynamism by offering a continuous proposal beyond the opening hours of the Museum.

The winning proposal of the contest to operate the “cafeteria” service was presented by Chichalimoná, a 100% Barcelona project led by Sara Reixach and Víctor Burgués. The gastronomic concept of the MACBA CAFÈ Chichalimoná is designed to reach the multiplicity of audiences that come to the museum, walk around the area or live in its surroundings: for the people of the neighborhood and the city, for those who work in the museum, for visitors and those who enjoy it. The essence of Chichalimoná is to combine different proposals for different times of the day.

Chichalimoná is a gastronomic “vermutería” founded in 2015. With a menu of seasonal dishes and tapas based on fresh and quality local produce, it was born as a personal project of Sara Reixach and Victor Burgués. It is an ideal place to pause and relax, and also to take care of yourself and regain strength with a very varied breakfast, a brunch for every morning of the week.

The architectural project has been designed and conceptualized by Llamazares Pomés Arquitectura and Eskubi-Turro Arquitectes, together with the MACBA architecture team. The new cafeteria seems to arise as a result of having emptied the interior of the building in order to discover a new space where warmth is the main protagonist: black walls, floor and ceiling replace the characteristic white of the museum to form an intimate and cozy interior. Likewise, a splendid golden frieze of curved shapes emerges that tops the top of the new space, behind the large window that overlooks Plaça dels Àngels. This frieze, by way of a large lamp, is the effective visual claim outside.

Inside, accessing from Plaça dels Àngels or from the passage that leads to Plaça de Joan Coromines, we discover two areas. One is the bar area, consisting mainly of natural oak wood and small-format tiles of intense bright black color, accompanied by a long bench, parallel and close to the window. It is the main place of reception of visitors, with tables and chairs of different format and with a clear vocation of direct connection with the street through the large window. The other area, more intimate and collected, with low tables, armchairs and carpets, is the one that opens to the passage, looking towards the MACBA library, and offers a space of greater tranquility.

Outside, in front of the window and capturing the atmosphere at the square level, a terrace welcomes visitors who want to enjoy the good weather of the Mediterranean climate.

In short, a surprising and cozy new space to pause and regain strength, browse the catalog of the latest MACBA exhibition or just have a good time.
